It was common practice in the eighteenth century to capitalize most nouns. This can confuse the contemporary reader and create distance between us and Benjamin Franklin. That is not, I think, what he would want, so I have modernized most capitalization and spelling. I have retained the use of ampersands, contractions (“fix’d” instead of “fixed,” for instance), and other stylistic touches to retain the flavor of Franklin and his time.
